Mountaineering Session (25th September 2021)

Trekking NI participated in an informal induction into the craft of mountaineering with representative body Mountaineering Ireland. Eight of our club members took part in this exercise with the aim to increase competencies in mountaineering skills. This practical session was conducted by Ronnie who invited participants to outline what they desired to attain from the experience. The group generally aimed to gain competency in using a compass and map reading. Ronnie initiated the session with a fun team map reading activity. We then covered distancing, pacing and compass navigation. We got to use a “Bivy” before learning how to independently and creatively deal with adverse incidents. This was a successful and fun session that fulfilled its purpose of helping improve participants confidence being independent hikers.
